CH19: Jāti (Birth)

CH19: Jāti (Birth)

At-a-glance: Future Effect • Vipāka-vaṭṭa • C3 projection

A. Definition & place in DO

  • Jāti = birth/coming-to-be of beings; in the DO definition it includes birth, taking birth, descent, coming-to-birth, appearance of the aggregates, and acquisition of the sense-bases (SN 12.2).

  • Placement (Ch02): Future Effect—arises conditioned by (kamma)bhava through C3; followed by jarāmaraṇa and the fivefold mass of suffering (SN 12.1).

  • Round (Ch03): Vipāka-vaṭṭa (result): the ripening of causes laid in Present Cause.

  • Function: establishes a new span of khandhas with saḷāyatana ready to meet objects, thus enabling fresh phassa → vedanā and a new turn of the wheel.

  • Scope note: In this handbook, jāti is treated per SN 12.1–12.2 as the effect of becoming; we neither add a “first cause” nor split the link into subtypes beyond the canonical definition.

B. Mechanism (how jāti is conditioned)

  • Upstream build: vedanā → taṇhā → upādāna → (kamma)bhava consolidate momentum (Ch16–18).

  • C3 hand-off: (kamma)bhava → jāti: present becoming projects the future arising of aggregates with their sense-bases (SN 12.1–12.2).

  • Downstream flow: jāti → jarāmaraṇa and the dukkha suite (soka, parideva, dukkha, domanassa, upāyāsa), completing the Future Effect segment (SN 12.1).

  • Cessation read: when upstream causes cease (especially taṇhā), upādāna and bhava do not ignite; with the cessation of bhava, jāti ceases—the downstream dukkha does not arise (SN 12.1).

C. Practice (micro-drills, 1–3 minutes)

  1. C3 Preview (90 sec)
Name a momentum currently building (habit/role/trajectory). Say: “If this becomes (bhava), what will ‘birth’ look like?” Picture the likely conditions (time, place, relationships). If unwholesome, choose one lighter intention now (restraint, kindness, truth).

  2. Chain Cut at Fuel (2 min)
When a strong urge appears, trace silently: vedanā → taṇhā → upādāna → (kamma)bhava → (projected) jāti. Place your finger on taṇhā and soften jaw/chest/hands; let upādāna fail to form.

  3. Result Reflection (3 min)
Recall a past “birth” of a pattern (job persona, online habit). Back-trace to the Present-Cause links you fed. Note one change that would have prevented that “birth.” Rehearse that change once now.

D. Cross-links

  • Ch18 (Kamma)bhava (immediate condition; C3 projection).

  • Ch20 Jarāmaraṇa (immediate downstream effect).

  • Ch03 Three Rounds (how kamma hands to vipāka at C3).

  • Ch06 Three Connections (C3 spotlight and ethics focus).
