A Spiritual Disturbance at the International Dormitory or Managing a Monastic Emergency

"Last year, a monk from International Dormitory A Building experienced disturbing visions. Despite other resident monks reciting parittas (protective chants), his condition didn't improve, so they came to invite me...

This morning at 5:30, there was urgent knocking on my door. When I opened it, two monks and a layperson were there, trembling and frightened, seeking help.
A monk had gone to use the common bathroom downstairs around 10:30-11:00 last night. According to him, he was being repeatedly called by the spirit of a woman who had died by suicide about 15 years ago.
This monk was thin and frail. Even though six strong monks tried to hold him down, they couldn't control him.
When he saw me, he tried to drive me away. I checked his vital signs:
- Heart rate was around 130
- Body was drenched in sweat
- Tongue was pale
- Lips were dry
- Eyes were wide and disturbed
While others held him down, I:
- Ensured proper ventilation
- Tried to give him sugar water when glucose wasn't available
- Recited protective chants
- Made loving-kindness aspirations
- Recited the Truths
- Shared metta
The condition seemed to affect another monk nearby who started showing similar symptoms.
I asked other monks to recite the Ratana Sutta and Atanatiya Sutta together. I also made requests to the Four Great Guardian Deities.
After tying blessed protection strings around his wrist, he gradually calmed down. The other 13 monks who had been dealing with this since midnight were quite shaken, so they request to gave them protection strings too.
I advised them to:
- Maintain regular devotional practices
- Listen to Dhamma teachings
- Regularly practice metta meditation
In these times, strange things are happening in the world. I am neither an exorcist nor someone who claims to drive away spirits."
