Weekly Outline (9 weeks)

Week 1 — Foundations & Map Literacy

  • Theme: What/why of paṭicca-samuppāda; SN 12.1 forward/cessation; SN 12.2 as glossary.

  • Objectives: Recite 12 links; place them broadly on the wheel; run Door Triangle once.

  • In class: Map tour; Four Periods quick sort; Door→Contact→Tone (one rep).

  • Homework: 3× “Tone→Lean→(Re-aim)” journal lines; glossary flash (avijjā…vedanā…taṇhā).

Week 2 — Present Effect (Viññāṇa → Nāma-rūpa → Saḷāyatana)

  • Theme: How knowing organizes experience; doors come online.

  • Objectives: Name six consciousnesses; list nāma’s five; pair internal/external bases.

  • In class: Know–Name–Note drill; Five-in-Five (nāma); Door Callout relay.

  • Homework: Label two real events with door + object + “contact”.

Week 3 — Contact & Feeling (Phassa → Vedanā)

  • Theme: Timing the pivot; vedanā as result (vipāka).

  • Objectives: Define contact triangle; classify six feelings by door; label tone in one word.

  • In class: Triangle Whisper; Vedanā Stop-Watch; Six-Door Lap.

  • Homework: Two 2-minute tone logs (pleasant and painful).

Week 4 — Present Cause (Taṇhā → Upādāna)

  • Theme: From lean to grip; six cravings & four clingings.

  • Objectives: State C2; list six taṇhā; name four upādāna and give one lighter replacement line.

  • In class: Catch-the-Lean; Four-Clinging Spotter; Feel–Name–Loosen body cues.

  • Assessment: Short Test 1 (MCQ + short answer + mini-practicum).

  • Homework: One “Swap the Fuel” re-aim per day (speech/action/attention).

Week 5 — Becoming & Projection ((Kamma)bhava → Jāti)

  • Theme: Momentum and the C3 hand-off; results arise later.

  • Objectives: Describe bhava’s three spheres; trace bhava→jāti; preview downstream dukkha.

  • In class: C3 Brake visualization; One-Intention Ledger; vignette tracing.

  • Homework: Trace one habit chain up to its likely “birth.”

Week 6 — Jarāmaraṇa & Meeting Pain Kindly

  • Theme: Dukkha suite after birth; working with loss without re-fueling C2.

  • Objectives: Define jarā/maraṇa (SN 12.2 terms); perform Pain→Tone→Soften.

  • In class: Three-Note Mortality; gentle body-based Loosen; reactivity spotting.

  • Homework: Two brief reflections on meeting a difficult tone without escalation.

Week 7 — Three Rounds & Three Connections (C1–C3)

  • Theme: Overlay rounds (kilesa/kamma/vipāka) and label hand-offs.

  • Objectives: Place each link in a round; describe C1/C2/C3 with endpoints and time direction.

  • In class: Trace-the-Handoff circuits; round-call lightning quiz.

  • Assessment: Short Test 2 (same frame as Test 1, new content).

  • Homework: One-page “Where I usually cross C2” reflection.

Week 8 — Twenty Modes & Present-Aspect (Khandha PS)

  • Theme: M1–M20 diagnostic + “no being, only aggregates.”

  • Objectives: Roll-call M1–M20; tag a scene with nearest mode; deconstruct a moment into five aggregates.

  • In class: Mode Card Sort; Five-Aggregate Deconstruction; C2 Freeze-Frame with coaching.

  • Homework: Assemble personal “wheel kit” (diagram + pause card + mode matrix).

Week 9 — Integration & Unit Exam

  • Theme: Bring it together; prove placement + timing + application.

  • Objectives: Confident map/placement, enumerations, live C2 interruption.

  • In class: Review stations; peer coaching; Unit Exam (map/placement, enumerations, vignette application, oral roll-call).

  • After: Set a 2-week personal practice plan (one daily C2 rep).

Pacing & options

  • Fast track: Merge Weeks 2–3, and 5–6 (7 weeks total) if time is tight.

  • Support track: Add a pre-exam clinic between Weeks 8–9 for extra C2 coaching.

  • Portfolio artifacts (weekly): tone logs, clinging replacements, intention ledgers, mode matrix, final wheel kit.

CH28: Sources & Sutta Sigla • Diagram Legend • Index

CH28: Sources & Sutta Sigla • Diagram Legend • Index

At-a-glance: Reference • How to read this book’s maps • Find-it-fast

A. Sources & citation practice (primary only)

  • Canon anchors used throughout (sigla → what we cite them for):

    • SN 12.1 — Paṭicca-samuppāda: forward & cessation chain; placement of 11–12 dukkha items.

    • SN 12.2 — Vibhaṅga: per-link definitions/enumerations (six feelings, six cravings, four clingings, three becomings, etc.).

    • SN 36 — Vedanā-saṁyutta: three tones (pleasant/painful/neither) and working with feeling.

    • SN 35 — Saḷāyatana-saṁyutta: six bases and contact dynamics.

    • SN 22 — Khandha-saṁyutta: five aggregates; “processes, not a self.”

    • SN 5.10 — Vajirā: “With parts assembled we say ‘being’…”.

  • How we cite: short form in the text (e.g., “SN 12.2”) and chapter Sources strips list only sigla. Full bibliographic details belong in your course syllabus or slide speaker notes.

  • Scope promise: this handbook keeps definitions/enumerations to SN 12.1–12.2; other suttas support practice framing, not to alter the 12-link map.

B. Diagram legend (how to read the figures)

  • Twelve links (fixed order):
    avijjā → saṅkhārā → viññāṇa → nāma-rūpa → saḷāyatana → phassa → vedanā → taṇhā → upādāna → (kamma)bhava → jāti → jarāmaraṇa.
Arrows = conditionality; dashed arrows denote cessation reading.

  • Four periods (outer frames):
Past Cause | Present Effect | Present Cause | Future Effect.
(The chain is one line; the frames are placements for teaching.)

  • Three rounds (color/pattern overlay):
Kilesa = avijjā, taṇhā, upādānaKamma = saṅkhārā, (kamma)bhavaVipāka = the rest.
Accessibility note: Do not rely on color alone—each round also has a distinct pattern/shape key (e.g., diagonal hatch for Kilesa, dot grid for Kamma, plain for Vipāka).

  • Three connections (beacons):
    C1 saṅkhārā → viññāṇa (Past→Present, Kamma→Vipāka) • C2 vedanā → taṇhā (Present pivot, Vipāka→Kilesa) • C3 (kamma)bhava → jāti (Present→Future, Kamma→Vipāka). Beacons are drawn as labeled tabs above their arrows.

  • Present-flow highlight: phassa → vedanā → taṇhā is boxed or haloed to signal the practice hinge (Ch08, Ch15–16).

  • Khandha present-aspect inset: a five-icon strip (rūpa • vedanā • saññā • saṅkhāra • viññāṇa) sits beside each door demo (Ch21–22).

  • Typography: Pāli with diacritics; no Burmese script in body text. All labels appear outside arrows (avoid clutter).

  • Print & accessibility: minimum 9-pt labels; 4.5:1 contrast; each diagram has a one-sentence alt text beneath the figure.

  • QR layout (for every page footer): keep a 4× module quiet zone around each code; size ≥ 20–30 mm square for A4/Letter; default ECC M (use H on textured backgrounds); in the PDF, each QR is clickable and has functional alt text (e.g., “QR to audio: Guided vedanā practice”).
