If you consistently maintain these Five Precepts, they create what we call 'icchāsaya' - a favorable disposition, a good reputation.

But the Five Precepts can make all of Burma fragrant, can't they?
When people say 'This person has good character,' 'This woman is virtuous,' 'This man has excellent moral conduct' - doesn't that fragrance spread throughout the country?
Yes, maintain these precepts. These are the essential points. Isn't this worth examining?
You can only abandon what you understand. How can you abandon what you don't understand? Strive to understand.
The four functions - Understanding, Abandoning, Realizing, Developing - occur in one moment of Path consciousness."
