"These days, many people are taking the practice lightly. When examining why they're not serious enough, we find that their faith-based wisdom (saddhā-paññā) is weak and they're still heavily attached to various things.
If they could completely let go, progress would be possible. But what's holding them back? They're still clinging to:
- Their livelihood and possessions
- Their siblings and relatives
- Their spouses
However, when one truly realizes:
'This is my final moment
The body is showing signs
There's pain and discomfort
Death is approaching'
At that time, with this understanding and if they have faith (saddhā), they can quickly turn their attention to the five aggregates (khandhas). Then, like the minister Santati, they could achieve sudden enlightenment.
But right now, these small attachments aren't yet severed. That's why progress is slow, dear devotee.
So when one truly understands this is their final moment, would they still turn towards worldly attachments? Currently, they haven't broken free from turning towards worldly things.
This is important to understand through learning (suta-saññā)."
