A. Definition & place in DO

  • Two roots orient the wheel without inventing a first cause:

    • Past-cause root: Avijjā (ignorance) → conditions saṅkhārā, launching the stream (SN 12.1).

    • Present-cause root: Taṇhā (craving) ← conditioned by vedanā, drives escalation to upādāna → (kamma)bhava (SN 12.1).

  • Avijjā (per SN 12.2): not knowing dukkha, its origin, its cessation, and the path (the four noble truths).

  • Taṇhā (per SN 12.2): six classes of craving: for forms, sounds, odors, tastes, tangibles, mental-objects (rūpa, sadda, gandha, rasa, phoṭṭhabba, dhamma).

  • Place in the four periods (Ch02): Avijjā sits in Past Cause (1); Taṇhā in Present Cause (3). Their downstream effects appear as Present/ Future Effects (2/4).

  • Rounds overlay (Ch03): Avijjā, taṇhā, upādāna = Kilesa; saṅkhārā, bhava = Kamma; experiential results = Vipāka.

B. Mechanism (how the two roots condition)

  • From past bias to present build:

    • Avijjāsaṅkhārā (C1’s upstream): skewed view births intentions/acts.

    • That kamma matures as present vipāka: viññāṇa → nāma-rūpa → saḷāyatana → phassa → vedanā.

  • Live tipping point (C2):

    • With feeling (vedanā), taṇhā seeks pleasant, resists painful, clings to neutral—feeding upādāna → bhava.

  • Projection (C3):

    • Bhavajāti carries the stack forward as future effect with jarāmaraṇa.

  • Cessation read (SN 12.1):

    • Ending avijjā via right view collapses its progeny.

    • Cooling taṇhā at the moment of vedanā prevents upādāna → bhava, starving the chain.

C. Practice (micro-drills, 1–3 minutes)

  1. Four-Truths Flashlight (1 min)
    Recall a minor frustration. Ask, in order: “Where is dukkha here? What origin is operating? What would cessation be? What path step now?” Name one step (e.g., right mindfulness).

  2. Vedanā→Label→Loosen (2 min)
    Sit with a fresh sensation. Label its tone (pleasant/neutral/painful). Whisper: “vedanā felt.” Notice the urge. Name it “taṇhā” (to get, to push, to fog). Exhale slowly; soften jaw/chest/hands. Re-label: “cooling.”

  3. Craving Map (3 min, pair or solo)
    List the six taṇhā doors (form, sound, odor, taste, touch, idea). Circle your top two this week. For each, write one cooling cue (e.g., “Sip water before clicking ‘Buy’,” “Count three breaths before replying”).
