Opening Veneration
"Namo Tassa Bhagavato Arahato Samma Sambuddhassa" (3 times)
Homage to the Blessed One, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One.
Let us focus our minds on the Five Infinite Graces and pay homage together:
"Namo Buddhassa, Namo Dhammassa, Namo Sanghassa, Namo Matapitu-assa, Namo Acariyassa."
Buddhassa: I pay homage to the Supreme Buddha, who clearly realized and understood the Four Noble Truths.
Dhammassa: I pay homage to the Noble Dhamma—the four Path-knowledges, the four Fruition-knowledges, Nibbana, and the scriptural teachings (the Tenfold Dhamma).
Sanghassa: I pay homage to the Noble Sangha—the eight types of Noble Persons standing in the Paths and Fruitions.
Matapitu-assa: I pay homage to my parents.
Acariyassa: I pay homage to the late Most Venerable Mogok Sayadaw and Munlel Sayadaw, who healed us with the Four Noble Truths and opened our eyes of Vipassana wisdom.
The Discussion: Is "Light of Mind" Science or Metaphor?
Date: October 22, 2022.
On our "Journey of the Torches of Victory," we have talked much about external material objects. Today, let’s explore the "Mind" as Energy. We will discuss whether the "Light of Mind" is merely a metaphor or a physical phenomenon through the lens of modern Bio-electromagnetism.
"Bhante, the moment I enter the Relic Chamber, I feel a sudden sense of peace. Is this just the Placebo Effect, or is there actual energy in that space?" asked Dr. Soe Moe, a Neurologist walking beside me. As a scientist, he seeks evidence for everything.
I replied, "Doctor, let me ask you: In medicine, how do you determine if someone is alive or dead? You use an EEG (Electroencephalogram) to measure the brain. What does that machine actually measure?"
"It measures the Electrical Impulses generated when neurons communicate with each other," he answered.
"Exactly. And Physics tells us that where there is an electrical current, there is a Magnetic Field. So, when a person’s mind is filled with wholesome thoughts and Loving-kindness (Metta), couldn’t those electrical impulses radiate outside the body as a Bio-electromagnetic Field?"
Dr. Soe Moe grew quiet. "Theoretically, yes, that is possible."
"Well," I said, "in the realm of Dhamma, we call that 'Manasakti'—Mental Energy."
The Wisdom of the Pali Canon
Regarding this principle, I want to recite a profound verse from the Samyutta Nikaya:
"Cittena nīyati loko, cittena parikassati.
Cittassa ekadhammassa, sabbeva vasamanagū."
Let’s translate this from the perspective of Energy Science:
Loko: The world (the world of beings and formations).
Cittena Niyati: Is led or directed by the Energy of Mind.
Cittena Parikassati: Is dragged around (by consequences of good and evil) because of the mind.
Cittassa ekadhammassa, sabbeva vasamanagū: All things fall under the influence and will of this one phenomenon called Mind.
"Doctor," I continued, "The HeartMath Institute has researched this. They found that the electromagnetic field produced by the Heart is up to 5,000 times stronger than that of the brain. When a person is angry or practicing Metta, their Heart Rate Variability changes, affecting people 3 to 5 feet away."
Therefore, feeling peace in the Relic Chamber isn't just a placebo. It is Resonance—your mental frequency aligning with the Infinite Energy Field stored within the sacred relics of the Arahants.
Case-B295: The High-Voltage Visitor
This reminds me of an incident at the Hswagata Museum categorized as Case-B295.
One day, a visitor arrived. His face was flushed red, and his footsteps were heavy and aggressive. He seemed to have just come from a fight. Interestingly, the moment he entered, a lightbulb in the chamber suddenly "popped" and burnt out. Other pilgrims began to look uncomfortable, and children started crying. The entire atmosphere became heavy.
At our museum, we use Template T118 (Spiritual Atmosphere & Vibe Check Log). We don't use machines; we use the Intuition and Observation of our staff. The staff logged: "Upon arrival of Visitor A, tension in the environment spiked. Other guests began to leave."
This was the reflection of Akusala (Unwholesome) Energy. The "Dosa" (Anger) waves from his mind were "polluting" the environment.
We applied Policy 4, Article 4.6 (Management of Spiritual Environment):
"The Museum guards not only the physical relics but also the spiritual atmosphere. Disruptive energies... must be neutralized through Metta and skilled interaction."
I approached the man myself. I didn't preach; I simply offered him a glass of cool water. Then, I sat quietly near him for five minutes, practicing Silent Metta Radiation.
After a while, the man sighed deeply. "Bhante, my mind was so hot with fire, but I feel cooler now," he said, and began to weep. His brainwaves had shifted from Beta (stress) to Alpha (peace). Immediately, the atmosphere in the Relic Chamber cleared.
Dr. Soe Moe nodded. "I understand now. You utilized the principle of 'Emotional Contagion.' You countered the contagion of anger with the contagion of Metta."
Takeaways for the Devotees
The "Mind" does not just stay inside your head. Like Wi-Fi, it is constantly broadcasting:
Watch Your Signal: What frequency are you broadcasting today? Anger (FM 100) or Metta (FM 500)? The people around you will react based on your signal.
Recharge Your Battery: Just as you charge a phone, recharge your "Dhamma Energy" through prayer, meditation, and venerating relics when you feel depleted.
Protect Your Field: Build a "Firewall" of Mindfulness (Sati) and Metta to prevent unwholesome waves from others from entering your heart.
The Buddha’s teaching, "Manopubbaṅgamā dhammā" (Mind is the forerunner of all states), aligns perfectly with Quantum Physics: "Consciousness creates Reality." Only when your inner light is bright will your world be bright.
May you all manage your mental energy well and share only the cooling essence of Metta with others.
